I first heard about Grip Grand's sophomore album, 'Brokelore', earlier today in the hip hop forum (where else). The album was getting props from many educated posters. Grip Grand - Tomorrow Brokelore (2008) You really should buy this one!!

7 / 10 Just when lyrical MCing seemed a thing of the past, here comes Grip Grand with “Tricks for the kids/Punchlines and choruses.” Many underground hip-hop albums these days quickly turn into jaded complain-fests over unexciting tracks; Brokelore revives the era when rappers strove to perfect their craft and sound unique, except they’ve added mega-slappin’ new-school beats. “I’m from the West Coast but I ain’t a felon or thug,” the formerly unheralded Oakland rapper says on “Hip Hop Classic,” and he shows his dedication to the art of storytelling by going toe-to-toe with Percee P and A.G. On “Paper Cup” and “Poppin’ Pockets,” respectively. GG’s drawled cadence might remind some of a less-conceited Kanye, but his skills shine just as brightly as Mr. West’s Jesus piece.

Frisco-born and LA-raised, Grip Grand is a rapper, producer, and songwriter best known for his rapping, producing, and songwriting. He has been compared to ever. Yone from Andre to Kanye, from the mighty Mos Def to the metal-faced Doom, and his vocals have been sampled by Madlib. Favoring a melodic and musical production style, he’s also plenty nice with the synthy keys and 808s. In short, they don’t call him Mr. Versatility for nothing. Grip's first full-length, Welcome to Broakland, was released on Dave Paul's legendary underground label Bomb Hip Hop Records in 2002; his second LP, Brokelore—featuring hip-hop luminaries Percee P and A.G.—dropped in 2008.

Since then, he's made songs with Phat Kat, Zion I, One Be Lo, and many others the world over, from Ireland's DJ Flip to Japan's DJ Sly. His work with Sly reached number 2 on the Japanese iTunes hip-hop charts. Grip has appeared in well-known print publications such as XLR8R and XXL, and he's been praised online at websites ranging from Okayplayer to IGN. Grip Grand was featured on URB Magazine's prestigious Next 100 list, and the East Bay Express named him Best Rapper of the Year.

In addition, regular people totally like his music. Not all of them, you know, but some, for sure.

They write him and say so themselves. We don’t think they have any reason to lie about it. Praise For Grip Grand: 'With hardly any industry push behind it, Brokelore is destined to be a lost classic, a perfectly constructed album.' SANTA CRUZ METRO, 'The Year's Best Hip-Hop Albums' 'Albums like Brokelore define the new paradigm of Bay Area hip-hop.

Grip Grand's excellent second record masters retro and progressive, gangsta and conscious, funky and jazzy, all while tiptoeing the line between indie ethics and mainstream appeal.' EAST BAY EXPRESS, 'Best Music of 2008-Editor's Picks' 'Just when lyrical MCing seemed a thing of the past, here comes Grip Grand.

XLR8R 'If you're in need of some real hip-hop, check out the new joint from Grip Grand, Brokelore.' 'Grip Grand balances spitting razor-sharp lyrics with actually PRODUCING most of the album, another act that he manages admirably. I had to double-check that Just Blaze didn't produce 'Win the War' - it is an unbelievably hot hornfest; 'Hip-Hop Classic' has already cemented itself on my Year End Review as one of my favorite songs; 'Tomorrow' is reminiscent of OutKast's best work.If you love hip hop, you'll love this album. 9 out of 10 ' 'Brokelore is a diverse collection of tunes anchored by Grand’s humble egotism and appreciation for Hip-Hop in its multiplicity of forms.'
